How to do pixel art- Where to start?

1. What are your intentions with pixel-art?

Before you embark on this journey, ask yourself this question.

Are you learning pixel-art as a hobby? Do you want to make games with it? Do you want to do this for a living?

2. Choose the software that meets your needs

These are the most common pixel art software I see people using. Each have its own pros and cons.
Choose the one that best fits your needs!

  1. Aseprite (Steam link here)- Used by most pixel artists & projects. Clean UI, great for animation as well. A one time purchase of $20. No cons ;)
  2. Photoshop - Used by many professional artists. Extensive functionality. Takes a ton of time to learn. Monthly subscription.
  3. Pyxel Edit  - Similar to Aseprite but tile based. Great for spriting tilesets. Only $9! Does not have all the functionality Aseprite has.
  4. GraphicsGale - UI similar to Paint. Great for animating. Free! The UI/UX design can get clunky at times.

3. Learn & practice the fundamentals

Start small & simple. Finish. Repeat with long term consistency. Make it a habit.

To start off, I'd recommend searching for gif-tutorials as they are fun to look at while being educational. Most gif-tutorials originate from social media by various artists so they are scattered all around the place.

Here are a a few websites that have gif-tutorials neatly compiled up for you:
  • Lospec
  • Pinterest boards
  • Pixilart
  • Studio Miniboss

And here are the artists that create those tutorials:
  • Pedro Medeiros (Part of Studio Miniboss): @saint11
  • Slynyrd: @rayslynyrd
  • Luke_Sadface: @Sadface_RL
  • MortMort: @MortMort_
  • Artem Brullov: @brullov_art
  • jasontomlee: @jasontomlee (this guy seems familiar...)

4. Share online to communities

Sharing your work online is not only a great way to build an online presence but to network with like-minded friends! It's also an amazing way to document your progress as an artist.

Here are the best sites to share your work on:
  • Twitter #PixelDailies @Pixel_Dailies
(Follow the daily prompt from @Pixel_Dailies then copy paste these hashtags on your post! #pixelart #Pixel_Dailies @Pixel_Dailies
  • Reddit/PixelArt
  • Pinterest
  • Discord Servers
